72.5 Flatpack Chair

This chair is designed around a higher luxury and quality in the flatpack category. Our chair shows a thoughtful process of minimalist design with a heavy focus on creating a stout and beautiful chair. We wanted a three legged concept to provide balance and structural integrity in the household. This led to the creation of the spine, the legs and the seat to join and solidify our design.

The name comes from the angles of the legs and spine of the chair. Both the front and back legs lean at a 72.5 degree angle from the base while the angle of the backrest remains parallel to the front legs.

A set of these chairs was selected into the 2019 AWFS Fresh Wood competition in Las Vegas where we won first place in the “Design for Production” category. We were honored for our innovative “flat-pack” chair in an awards ceremony in July at the AWFS Fair in Las Vegas. More info

The Essentials

The primary goal of the project was to strip what ‘design’ is down to its most essential elements. We wanted a chair that uses the least number of parts possible to cut down on future production costs and at the same time could be elegant and provide simple luxury for everyone.

This chair is made of walnut legs joined with floating tenon joints, and a back/seat made of one piece of leather sandwiched between two pieces of Baltic birch plywood. Kerfing the plywood to the leather core is what allows the flexibility to fit along the walnut spline. Leather provides strength and longevity for our users.

Prior to making this chair a reality we spent time modeling and rendering with Solidworks and Keyshot. This helped us get a better representation and make tweaks before the final build.
